Types of Pain

Pain is feeling of uneasiness due to stimulus from a noxious agent. Noxious stimulus irritates the pain nerve fibers and pain impulse is transmitted to the brain. Thus pain is a useful phenomenon which warns the person regarding the harmful stimulus. (Think what will happen if your hand is on Fire and you feel no pain!!). There are various such diseases (e.g. Leprosy) where pain sensation is lost and patient develops ulcers due to injury from harmful/noxious stimulus.

There are various types of pain like – dull pain, burning pain, colicky pain, stabbing pain, stretching pain, twisting pain, or “just a pain”. For example, Gastric ulcer pain is burning in nature, Gall bladder pain is colicky while Calf pain or thigh muscle pain is stretching in nature..

For the pain relief, one can take analgesics like NSAIDs or Morphine group of drugs. If the pain is colicky, AntiSpasmodics can be given. If the pain continues or increases in severity, contact the doctor soon. The doctor will do necessary investigations and will prescribe you appropriate medicine.
