The Healing Values of Dance

The body and mind of a person are interrelated. If one’s body is afflicted with some defect, it is likely that the mind is affected by it in some way.

The interrelationship of mind and body are notable from the early years of a child. When a child is shy and withdrawn, physically he or she could also be timid and even weak, lacking the drive in any kind of physical activity. Even in games with playmates, the shyness and timidity of a child invariably shows and is quite evident compared to the aggressiveness of the others.

Many parents resort to signing their shy children up in dancing lessons to help them overcome their shyness and inhibitions. The well-trained dance instructors know their art well and make the children go through the dance training in a happy environment, thus leading to a more confident and sociable, growing teenager. Many mothers proudly talk about the amazing changes the children experience after weeks of attending their dancing lessons.

In the case of adults affected with physiological and psychological maladies, dance/movement therapy has become a major tool in their treatment. This means that dancing as an activity helps in the psychotherapeutic treatment and improvement of the emotional, cognitive, physical, and social condition of the individual. Mental health, rehabilitation centers, medical institutions and nursing homes now use dance/movement therapy for the “happy” healing of their wards.

The dance/movement therapist focuses on the movement behavior and the physical exercise of a patient. With the dancing, the physically active patient is most likely happy too, thus automatically undergoing some of the psychological healing that is needed.

  1. Great article! I feel dancing is not great exercise for the body but also for the mind. It can really cure a lot of mental ailments and it is great therapy for anyone that is stressed out.
