I got Needle Stick injury today!
Today I got needle-stick injury over my forefinger while collecting a blood sample from an indoor patient.
The patients HIV and HbsAg status was unknown. Basically, the patient was admitted for high-grade fever and was diagnosed to be having malarial fever.
I got apprehended and asked my colleagues and seniors regarding what should I do now.
I immediately kept my finger in my mouth and started sucking out some blood.
Also started rubbing spirit swab for few minutes over the pricked part.
But the senior doctors and nurses told that such things happen with us very often and asked me to keep cool. Even though I was not satisfied and asked the head of department regarding that.
He told me to ask about the patients risk behavior and go for her HIV/HbsAg testing.
Then after, I only asked about her sexual history (not a risky behavior it was) and did nothing thereafter. I got somewhat Relaxed!!!
Some Do’s and Don’ts for it are:
- Wash the local site thoroughly with running tap/pint water.
- Use soap if there is a skin wound. (Viral cell wall contains glycolipid and so is destroyed by soap)
- Don’t panic or put your finger in your mouth
- Don’t squeeze blood from the wound - causes trauma and inflammatory reaction - more chances for spread.
- No need of any antiseptic application.
Then I read about PEP , some important details are as below:
A PEP emergency kit should contain
- Minimum of 72 hours worth of 3 drugs in extended regime
- Consent and reporting forms
- Rapid test kits for testing the source
- Information about nearest ART center
Also PEP is most effective if started within 3 hours and is given for a maximum period of 28 days.
